Kilmer Applauds Executive Order to Usher in Next Era of Tribal Self-Determination
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Representative Derek Kilmer (WA-06) released the following statement after President Joe Biden signed an executive order to usher in the next era of Tribal self-determination:
“The federal government has a moral and a legal obligation to uphold promises made to Indian Country.
“Today, I commend President Biden for his decisive action in signing an executive order that significantly advances our nation’s commitment to Native American Tribes. By prioritizing direct and meaningful engagement with Tribal leaders, this administration is taking a critical step in redressing the historical underfunding of Native communities.
“This executive order establishes uniform standards for federal agencies to conduct Tribal consultations, ensuring consistency and respect for Tribal input in policymaking – and fairer outcomes for Tribal nations. This level of consideration is pivotal in addressing the systemic inequities faced by Native communities in Washington and across the country. In Washington’s Sixth Congressional District, improved access to federal resources is especially critical for coastal Tribes to relocate villages in the face of dangerous sea level rise.
“It is heartening to see the Biden Administration actively working to fulfill its promises to Native Nations. And it remains incumbent upon Congress and all federal entities to continue this momentum and ensure that the United States lives up to its trust and treaty obligations to Indian Country.”
