Kilmer Recognizes Tacoma and Gig Harbor Students in Congressional Art Competition, Welcomes First Place Winner to Washington, D.C.
TACOMA, WA – Today, U.S. Representative Derek Kilmer (WA-06) announced Charles Wright Academy student Mera Foster as the first-place winner of the 2024 Congressional Art Competition for Washington’s Sixth Congressional District.
The annual nationwide art competition allows high school students from across the United States to showcase their artistic ability. Mera’s work, titled “Piecing Together a Memory,” will now be displayed for eleven months in the tunnel leading to the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., alongside winners from across the country. Mera was also invited on a trip for two to visit Washington, D.C. and had the opportunity to see her piece firsthand last week during her visit.
Kaylie Holt of Gig Harbor High School in Gig Harbor, and Mari Dubro of the School of the Arts (SOTA) in Tacoma, placed second and third in the annual competition.
“There are so many incredibly talented students in our neck of the woods,” said Rep. Kilmer. “The Congressional Art Competition provides students across our region with the opportunity to showcase their artistic abilities – and earn a chance to win a trip to our nation’s capital. I’m thrilled that so many young people from every corner of our region could participate this year. Their submissions were absolutely outstanding. Congratulations to Mera – it was great to have the opportunity to welcome her to our nation’s capital!”
