Kilmer at meet/greet

Rep. Derek Kilmer will tour Park View Villas, 1430 Park View Lane, Port Angeles, from 1:30-2:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18. While visiting, Kilmer will tour the Park View Villas and speak with residents about his work in Washington, D.C., including important issues near and dear to seniors’ hearts.

His passions in policy lie in military and veterans affairs while serving as a strong proponent for seniors through Medicare and Social Security preservation.

DEAFOP gathers for festival

DEAFOP members are invited to the Northwest Colonial Festival at George Washington Inn on Saturday, Aug. 13. The first interpreted event for the day begins at 11:30 a.m., so please arrive around 11 a.m. and look for other members. You can review the website for the festival atcolonialfestival.wordpress.com.

Buy tickets online from the website or by visiting the gift shop at the George Washington Inn & Estate, 939 Finn Hall Road, Port Angeles. If you buy tickets in advance for $10 or $20 per family then you will save $2. Tickets are $12 on the day of the event, so order early. There will be historical battle reenactments and a colonial encampment including artisans at work.

Park entrance closed

The main entrance to Carrie Blake Community Park, near the Shiso City Friendship Garden on North Blake Avenue, will be closed for maintenance on the pond from 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday, Aug. 15-31. Visitors to the park should use the entrance farther north on Blake Avenue near the Water Reuse Demonstration Site. Parking is available near the entrance and farther east near the Albert Haller Playfields. Contact the Sequim Public Works Department at 683-4908 with questions.

Pioneer picnic planned

The Sequim Pioneer Picnic will be at noon Sunday, Aug. 14, at the Sequim Prairie Grange, 290 Macleay Road. Those attending are asked to bring salad, main dish or dessert. Drinks and service are provided. For more information, call Loretta Grant at 683-3194.

Rookard fundraiser at grange social this Saturday

The Sequim Prairie Grange will have its last ice cream social of the summer from 5-7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 14. All proceeds will be donated to the Willy Rookard family to help offset Willy’s mounting medical expenses. Banana splits or sundaes are $5 each. The grange is at 290 Macleay Road. Coffee with mayor set

The City of Sequim “Coffee with the Mayor” program continues in August. Sequim residents can meet informally with Mayor Dennis Smith, at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, at the Bell Creek Bar and Grill, 707 E. Washington St.

The mayor will be at the Bell Creek Bar and Grill each month to listen to anyone who wants to chat, ask questions, express a concern or make a comment about the city or the community.

Work party to freshen up the Sequim Dog Park

Join volunteers from the Sequim Dog Park and the City of Sequim at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 13,  as they prepare and repaint the obstacle course at the Sequim Dog Park in Carrie Blake Community Park, 202 N. Blake Ave.

The course was built by the Sequim Police Department in 2011 and is used by the Police Department and the public for canine agility training.

Climate change talk set

The forecast predicts climate change with a chance of unusual weather patterns this August. Local atmospheric scientist Dr. Cliff Mass will present “How Will Northwest Climate Change Under Global Warming?” at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 17.

His presentation will focus on the projected impacts of global warming on the Olympic Peninsula. In addition to reviewing the current science, Mass will evaluate the quality of media coverage regarding climate change.
