More Candidate Forums Coming Up- Including Two in Forks

Pre-primary candidate forums are planned this week and next week in Clallam County.

The Clallam County League of Women Voters has scheduled a forum on county commission candidates for District 3 in Forks on Wednesday.

The forum will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Forks Concerned Citizens across from Thriftway, behind Sunshine and Rainbows.

Competing for the seat are Sissi Bruch, a Democrat and Port Angeles City Council member; Bill Peach, a Forks Republican and retired forester and Quillayute Valley Parks and Recreation District commissioner; and Bryon Monohon, mayor of Forks, who filed as an independent.

Mike Doherty, longtime holder of the seat, is not running for re-election.

On day following that forum, candidates for the 6th Congressional District — which includes the North Olympic Peninsula — will be featured at a League gathering from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Port Angeles Senior Center, 328 E. Seventh St.

Derek Kilmer, D-Gig Harbor, is challenged in his bid for a second term by W. “Greybeard” McPherson of Port Angeles, who stated no party preference; Republican Marty McClendon of Gig Harbor; and Green Party candidate Douglas Milholland of Port Townsend.

Kilmer’s office said he plans to send a representative in his place because the House of Representatives will be in session on the day of the forum and will be taking votes.

The top-two primary election Aug. 5 will narrow the Nov. 4 general election ballot to the two candidates who received the most primary election votes. Primary ballots will be mailed to registered voters July 18.

On Wednesday, July 16, the League will host a forum of the District 3 county commissioner candidates from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Port Angeles Senior Center.

At each of the forums, each candidate will have three minutes for opening remarks, followed by questions asked by a moderator.

Questions will be taken from the audience.

Candidates for the Charter Review Commission have been invited to introduce themselves and there will be time to meet candidates personally at the close of the forum.

The Shelter Providers Network will host another forum with District 3 county commissioner candidates from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 16 at the Forks Community Center, 91 Maple Ave.

The public also is invited to the shelter providers’ meeting, which will begin at 9 a.m.
