Rep. Kilmer, Peninsula College to Hold Student Town Hall
U.S. Rep. Derek Kilmer has teamed up with the Peninsula College Associated Student Council for a Student Town Hall at 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 4.
Kilmer, a Port Angeles native who represents the state’s Sixth Congressional District — which includes the North Olympic Peninsula — will share remarks about the 2018 Legislative Session and will field questions from the audience at the college’s Little Theater at 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles.
The Student Town Hall is free and open to college students and members of the community.
Peninsula College student leaders actively participate in state and national legislative agendas and will host Kilmer for the first time since the 2016-17 academic year.
“After talking with our state representatives in October, and getting to hear what is happening at the state level I am looking forward to the opportunity to voice student needs to Congressman Kilmer,” said Bonnie Sires, a Port Angeles High School Running Start student serving as Peninsula’s ASC vice president this year.
While state legislation governs tuition and the policies that guide Washington’s community and technical colleges, financial aid, student debt, immigration and Title IX are examples of higher education policy issues governed at the national level.
“I am very pleased that Congressman Kilmer has made himself available to our students and our community,” said Rick Ross, associate dean for athletics and student life at Peninsula College.
“He is a home-grown Port Angeles leader who listens and who has been very responsive to our students’ concerns over the years.”
Kilmer, a Democrat, has represented the Sixth Congressional District since 2013. He previously served in the state House of Representatives 2005-07 and the state Senate 2007-13.
