Restore Integrity

Former Congressman Mick Mulvaney recently told banking industry executives and lobbyists that they should increase their campaign donations if they want to influence lawmakers.

Mulvaney revealed that when it came to meeting with lobbyists, he only agreed to meet with those who contributed to his campaign. Admission of this hierarchy based on campaign contributions is no surprise. It is just one more affirmation that our political and policy system is broken.

Fewer than 7 percent of Americans donate nearly 70 percent of all campaign finances.

With only a tiny slice of citizens currently funding campaigns, our representatives are responsive to and represent the will of only a tiny slice of America. This does not reflect the demographics, values, or socioeconomic interests of society as a whole.

There is hope.

In April, Rep. Derek Kilmer (D-Wash.) and Rep. Jim Renacci (R-Ohio), along with 10 other lawmakers from both parties, introduced the Restoring Integrity to America’s Elections Act in Congress.

Another source of hope comes from Loyalsock High School graduate Lawrence Lessig and his Equal Citizens movement.

Will Representative Tom Marino support this bill and the Equal Citizens platform?

If ever there was a time to restore integrity, surely it is now.
