U.S. House Passes Rutherford–Sponsored School Safety Bill
This week the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Students, Teachers, and Officers Preventing School Violence Act of 2018. The bill was sponsored by Representative John Rutherford (R-FL), along with Reps. Ted Deutch (D-FL), Derek Kilmer (D-WA), and Hal Rogers (R-KY).
Congressman Rutherford released a statement on Wednesday following the vote, saying it’s a good first step toward keeping our children and schools safe.
“I know from my time as Sheriff that school and community safety requires a multi-layered approach. The STOP School Violence Act…gives students, teachers, and officers resources and training required to identify warning signs to prevent terrible acts of violence before they occur,” says Rutherford.
The legislation, which was introduced on January 30, has wide bipartisan support in both chambers as it heads now to the U.S. Senate.
