Key Veteran Organization Presents Kilmer with Award for his Work to Support Veterans

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Last week, AMVETS leaders (or American Veterans) presented Representative Derek Kilmer (D-WA) with the 2015 Silver Helmet Award. The silver replica of a World War II GI helmet is awarded each year to one member of Congress whose work to support and create opportunities for veterans stands out.

AMVETS is focused on assisting all United States veterans. There are over 250,000 members and the organization is open to anyone who is currently serving, or served honorably, in the U.S. Armed Forces from World War II to today. Members can also be part of the National Guard and Reserves.

“I have the honor of representing more veterans than any other Democrat in Congress,” said Kilmer. “So it’s important to me that we have the backs of the men and women who put themselves in harm’s way to defend our way of life. AMVETS has been an outstanding partner to work with to ensure our veterans get the respect and care they deserve. I am humbled to receive the Silver Helmet Award and look forward to continuing our work to do right by our nation’s veterans.”

Diane Zumatto, AMVETS National Legislative Director said: “AMVETS is pleased to announce the presentation of its highest award, the Silver Helmet, known as the ‘Veterans Oscar’, to Representative Derek Kilmer, for his leadership and staunch support of AMVETS’ fight for the elimination of veteran and servicemember discrimination in employment and housing. Representative Kilmer serves Washington’s 6th Congressional District and represents the most veterans of any Democratic member of Congress and works tirelessly to ensure that the needs of our veterans are always at the forefront.”

Since coming to Congress, Kilmer has made it a priority to support veterans, servicemembers and their families. Kilmer formed a Veterans Advisory Group to focus on challenges that veterans face and with their feedback, has focused on educational barriers, discriminatory practices, veterans’ homelessness, and access to medical care.
