Kilmer Announces Assistance for Workers Impacted by Allen Logging Company Mill Closing
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Representative Derek Kilmer (D-WA) announced that workers impacted by the closing of Allen Logging Company’s mill in Jefferson County are eligible for opportunities to acquire new skills. The 45 mill workers who lost their job because of the closure can now apply for Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA). TAA provides support and training for workers who have lost their jobs due to increased imports from other countries.
“Our neck of the woods has been hit hard by mill closures,” said Kilmer. “So it’s good news that TAA will provide quality job training to give folks on the Olympic Peninsula opportunities to find new work. There is still a lot to do to grow jobs on the Olympic Peninsula and that’s what I am focused on.”
The TAA program, first started in 1962 and reauthorized last year, includes several components: training assistance, income support while in training, and job search and relocation assistance. Additional programs assist farmers, fishermen, and firms with the development and implementation of business plans to enable them to regain a competitive foothold.
