Kilmer Announces Extension of Public Comment Period for Clean-Up Project near Forks

TACOMA, WA. – Today, Representative Derek Kilmer (D-WA) announced that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will give the public until July 15, 2016 to comment on a clean-up plan for Naval Auxiliary Air Station Quillayute. Kilmer had previously called on the Army Corps to extend the public comment period.

Currently, the Army Corps has conducted tests to determine if Department of Defense activities in the past released hazardous substances into soil and groundwater. The Corps reported that there is no elevated risk to people or the environment at the site and have recommended no further clean-up. In collaboration with the Washington State Department of Ecology, the Corps will make their final decision after review and consideration of the additional public comments.

“I’m glad the Army Corps is responding to my request to better include the views of folks who live in the area when making a final decision,” said Kilmer. “We need to make sure that former military sites do not put our communities at risk and that the public is involved in the mitigation of those properties.”
