Kilmer Statement on Passage of Violence Against Women Act Reauthorization

Representative Derek Kilmer released the following statement after the passage of a strong, bipartisan Violence Against Women Act Reauthorization – the same bill passed in the Senate two weeks ago.  Representative Kilmer strongly supports this bill and previously called on House Leadership to bring it up for a vote. Kilmer also today voted against the Republican alternative to the Violence Against Women Act substitute proposed by Republicans leaders.

Representative Kilmer co-sponsored H.R. 11, a Violence Against Women Act Reauthorization almost identical to the bill passed today.

“Domestic violence is real and no woman should ever suffer in silence in the face of abuse.  Over 500 days after Congress let the Violence Against Women Act expire, all victims of domestic violence will finally receive access to critical protections,” said Representative Kilmer. “Congress shouldn’t pick and choose which groups of women receive basic protections under the law. All women deserve to be safe. I’m pleased Congress got it together and passed a strong, bipartisan bill that protects all women.”

Based on feedback from our law enforcement officers and community leaders, the Violence Against Women Act supported by Representative Kilmer significantly strengthens the ability of law enforcement and service providers to combat domestic violence.  The bill also includes provisions to ensure that all victims of domestic violence receive the protection they need – including providing new protections for tribal members, immigrants and members of the LGBT community.
