Murray, Kilmer Applaud Increased Support for Central Kitsap School District in Legislation to Fix No Child Left Behind

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), and Representative Derek Kilmer (D-WA) applauded House passage of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), the bipartisan legislation to rewrite No Child Left Behind, which included critical Impact Aid relief for Central Kitsap School District.

“I am proud of our bipartisan work to fix the broken No Child Left Behind law and to ensure the Central Kitsap School District receives the resources it needs to serve students from military families,” said Senator Murray. “I’ve heard from parents, teachers, and administrators in Central Kitsap School District about just how important the Impact Aid program is to their community, which is why I fought to include this funding in our bipartisan legislation. I am glad the House voted in favor of the final bill today, and I look forward to finishing the legislative process and sending it to the President’s desk so this bill can get to work for Washington state communities like Kitsap.”

“This bill’s passage gives us needed reforms to our education system – and does right by students in Central Kitsap,” said Representative Kilmer. “Since the district did not receive the proper impact aid funding it should have, we’ve worked tirelessly to fix this error. That’s because these resources are critical to the learning experience of military-connected students. Now, we can finally restore these funds to provide programs and activities to help our kids succeed and make sure families in the Central Kitsap School District are treated fairly.”

ESSA provides much-needed relief to the Central Kitsap School District by directing the Secretary of Education to release $14 million in unobligated funds to CKSD for the fiscal years in which they were deemed ineligible for Heavy Impact Aid.
