Rep. Kilmer, Sen. Murray, Sen. Cantwell Release Joint Statement on Diversion of Funds from Local Military Construction Project to Build a Wall at the Southern Border
Bremerton, WA – Today, U.S. Senators Patty Murray (D-WA) and Maria Cantwell (D-WA), along with U.S. Representative Derek Kilmer (WA-06), released the following statement in response to the U.S. Department of Defense releasing a list of military construction projects, including one in Washington state, that will be cut to fund construction of a border wall. The project at Naval Base Kitsap includes the construction of a pier that supports the Maritime Force Protection Unit, which protects submarines and their crew on the way to and from the base. This project, which has the potential to create jobs and spur economic growth in Kitsap County, supports critical missions that protect America.
“Each year, Congress works with the Department of Defense to fund priority military projects that are imperative to our national security. It is deeply disturbing to see the administration unilaterally raid funds from these vital projects in Washington and across the country to fund an ineffective, completely unnecessary border wall. Our men and women in uniform deserve better.”
