Kilmer Announces Grants for Grays Harbor College to Help Students Succeed
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Representative Derek Kilmer (D-WA) announced that Grays Harbor College received U.S. Department of Education grants to help students succeed. The two grants awarded to the college will boost its TRiO Student Support Service program and last for five years.
One award will invest $231,103 each year in the general program that helps low-income students, first generation students, and those with disabilities get needed academic support. Another award will invest $220,000 each year to improve the graduation and transfer rates of 120 participants in a STEM Health Services program.
“This is great news for Grays Harbor College and its students,” said Kilmer. “As the son of two public school teachers I believe education is the doorway to opportunity. Some folks who come to Grays Harbor College are walking through the doors of higher education for the first time or face other challenges. It’s critical they have the tools they need to thrive and go on to get good jobs. These awards support programs that help put students on the path to success.”
“These grants will support the continuing excellence of our Student Support Services program that has helped so many reach their higher education goals,” said Grays Harbor College President Ed Brewster. “They will also allow us to expand our reach and keep STEM students in our health services program on pace as we open our state of the art Schermer Building this Fall. I’d like to thank Representative Kilmer for his support of the continued success of our institution.”
The Grays Harbor College TRiO Student Support Services is designed to assist students who might not be as familiar with the higher education system and seeks to help them meet their goals – both at the school and transferring to four-year institutions.
