Leading Conservation Group Recognizes Kilmer as a Champion for National Parks

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) presented Representative Derek Kilmer (D-WA) with the Friend of the National Parks Award. The honor was given to highlight Kilmer’s work protecting and enhancing the national park system.

NPCA is focused on preserving our nation’s natural, historical, and cultural heritage. With more than one million members, the organization is a voice for national parks and the National Park Service.

“I have the honor of representing a region known for its natural beauty and diverse wildlife,” said Kilmer. “Investing in our parks means investing in jobs, the communities supported by national parks, and their visitors. I am honored to receive the Friend of the National Parks Award and look forward to partnering with them to protect parks for current and future generations.”

Kilmer represents Washington’s 6th Congressional District, home to Olympic National Park - a treasured natural resource and important draw for tourists from around the world. A study conducted by the National Park Service found that in 2014 alone, Olympic National Park visitors contributed $2.6 million to the local economy and supported 3,500 local jobs.

Clark Bunting, NPCA President and CEO said: “It’s an honor to recognize Representative Derek Kilmer for supporting our national parks on the floor of the House during the 113th Congress. As the 114th Congress works on policies and funding levels impacting our national parks, I look forward to working with Representative Kilmer to ensure national parks have safe roadways, are well maintained, and have the resources they need to thrive for their upcoming centennial.”
